The Golden Age of Piracy coincided with the explosion of maritime trade. Trade between Europe and America across the Atlantic boomed as pirates scoured the seas.
Pirate numbers increased dramatically with the appearance of private interests. Sailors were hired by commercial shipping magnates and forcibly recruited to the Navy. Following the naval war in Europe, many of these sailors could find no employment and opted for piracy as a method of survival.
